Ethiopian Catholic Church Liturgical Calendar – Ge’ez (Alexandrian) and Latin Rite
Each year, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia – Liturgical Commission prepares the annual liturgical calendar for both the Ge’ez and Latin Rites. This calendar outlines the daily celebrations, liturgical colors, World Days observed during the year, Scripture readings, and public holidays. It is primarily intended for authors of ordines and other liturgical aids, but it is also available for download and use by anyone interested.
Aliturgical Days of the Holy Week
In the Alexandrian tradition, Mass is not celebrated on the three days of Holy Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday because of the sorrow occasioned by the Passion when, indeed, the celebration of the Eucharist always retains a joyful character. More deeply, this places us in the situation Adam (i.e. humankind, ourselves) was in before Jesus Christ came. Indeed, we should not take for granted our
relationship with the Saviour, but renew our awareness of all it changes in life. Finally, Palm Sunday corresponds to the 10th day of the new moon, when the Jews used to buy the one-year-old lambs for the feast of Passover. They kept the lambs at home for three days, and then killed them at sunset on Nisan 14th, Passover day. Similarly, the Lamb of God was mystically slain at the Last Supper on Holy Thursday before being crucified as the paschal lambs were being slaughtered.
The “incipit” of the Psalm-versicle is given before the Gospel. Only chapter and verses are quoted, being the Book of Psalms (mZÑr ÄêET) the only possible source.
