His Grace Archbishop Tesfaye (Tesfasilasie) Tadesse Gebresilasie M C.C.J.,  Elected as President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia

At the 60th Regular Annual Assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia, held on 6th August 2026 in Addis Ababa, His Grace Archbishop Tesfaye (Tesfasilasie) Tadesse Gebresilasie, was elected and appointed President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia. Furthermore, in accordance with the statutes and by virtue of this office (ex officio), His Grace also assumes the role of Chancellor of the Ethiopian Catholic University, effective immediately.

Following the retirement of His Eminence Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, C.M. who faithfully served as President of the Conference and Chancellor of Ethiopian Catholic University for many years, the members of the Conference conducted an election during which Archbishop Tesfasilasie Tadesse, Archbishop of Addis Ababa, was chosen to serve as the next President.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia expresses its profound gratitude to His Eminence Cardinal Abune Berhaneyesus for his dedicated leadership over the past 28 years. Through his vision, commitment, and pastoral guidance, the Conference achieved significant growth and numerous accomplishments in its mission of serving the Church and society in Ethiopia.
