Statement of Condolence from the Ethiopian Catholic Church

We, the members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia, are deeply saddened by the loss of lives of our beloved citizens due to the devastating landslides and floods in the Gamo Zone of Southern Ethiopia on March 11, 2026. We grieve as well for the many families who have been displaced and now face great suffering in the aftermath of this disaster.

The Ethiopian Catholic Church has begun providing the necessary support through the Apostolic Vicariate of Sodo, along with the management of the CBCE’s physical visitation to the affected area. However, considering the critical nature and severity of the disaster, we urge all Ethiopians and people of goodwill to collaborate for an immediate humanitarian assistance.

As the Word of God teaches us, “Mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15), let us stand alongside our brothers and sisters during this painful time.

During these three days of national mourning, declared by the FDRE House of People’s Representatives, let us be united in prayer, offer Holy Mass, and extend immediate humanitarian support to all affected individuals.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia expresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, relatives, and the entire people of Ethiopia. May Almighty God receive the souls of those who lost their lives in His mercy, and grant true consolation upon the survivors and to their families.
